What is SYMBIS?

SYMBIS stands for Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts.  It is an evidenced-based premarital counseling tool developed by authors and therapists Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott.

Why is SYMBIS important?

Preparing for marriage, or improving an existing marriage, leads to greater overall satisfaction within the marriage. In a society where the divorce rate is over 50% for first marriages (and 67% for second marriages), it is more important than ever to invest in your marriage before it starts.  SYMBIS is also very beneficial for second marriages and has an additional assessment built-in for this scenario.  

The SYMBIS assessment integrates faith and spirituality if that is important to the couple. It helps couples understand how their needs and personalities contribute to spiritual practices within marriage.

What is involved?

SYMBIS is an online tool that allows engaged or newly married couples (or even couples who have been married for a while!) to log on individually and take an assessment. The assessment has questions about personality, family of origin, money and communication. The therapist receives the results and sets up a minimum of six sessions to review strengths, weaknesses, or caution flags identified by the assessment tool. Together we talk about areas for individual growth or improvement.  We also discuss what the couple needs to address within the relationship.
